CRC - HOW IT WORKS

How to earn a Mississippi Career Readiness Certificate

To earn a Mississippi Career Readiness Certificate, individuals are assessed in three areas; Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Locating Information through the WorkKeys® employability skills assessment system. As a result of the assessments, individuals earn a career readiness certificate or identify areas in which they need further instruction.
  • Reading for Information – This assessment examines an individual’s ability to understand information in the common workplace. It measures the skills people use when they read and use written text in order to do a job. The written texts include memos, letters, directions, signs, notices, bulletins, policies, and regulations. It is often the case that workplace communications are not necessarily well-written or targeted to the appropriate audience. Reading for Information materials do not include information that is presented graphically, such as in charts, forms, or blueprints.
  • Applied Mathematics – This assessment measures the skills people use when they apply mathematical reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving techniques to work-related problems. The test questions require the examinee to set up and solve the types of problems and do the types of calculations that actually occur in the workplace. This test is designed to be taken with a calculator. A formula sheet that includes all formulas required for the assessment is provided. While individuals may use calculators and conversion tables to help with the problems, they still need to use math skills to think them through.
  • Locating Information – This assessment measures the ability to understand and extract information from graphics such as diagrams, tables, forms, graphs, and charts. The skill people use when they locate, synthesize, and use information from workplace graphics is a basic skill required in today's workforce.
In Mississippi, individuals have the opportunity to earn one of four levels of Career Readiness Certification (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum) based upon their scores on the WorkKeys™ assessment.
