George F. Walker
Workforce Training Award

Mr. Walker was a board member of the MCCB from 1991 until 2010 and served as Chairman for 14 years. He was mindful of and greatly supported the important role our community colleges play in workforce training. Mr. Walker valued the impact that community colleges have on state economic development, and how essential workforce training is as a tool to help attract business and industry to our state. In addition, he focused on providing workforce training to enhance productivity and employment opportunities for existing businesses. Mr. Walker was instrumental in the creation of the Workforce Enhancement Training Fund which provides money to our community colleges for workforce training projects. He helped to bring prosperity to many thousands of our citizens both as an employer and public servant. Without question, Mr. Walker was one of our state’s foremost champions of improving education and training for Mississippi workers. Mr. Walker’s longtime services rendered to the community college system resulted in immeasurable contributions. To commemorate his boundless efforts, an annual workforce award has been established in his honor. The award is referred to as the George F. Walker Workforce Training Award.
The nomination deadline is Friday, October 17, 2014. The deadline is the date after which nominations will no longer be accepted.

  • This distinguished achievement will be awarded to the nominee who best exemplifies the passion of Mr. Walker by providing extraordinary contributions for the betterment of workforce training.
  • Eligible recipients include current or former community college directors, coordinators, instructors and staff, business and industry that have demonstrated quality community college partnerships, MCCB administrators and staff, legislators, and state officials.
  • Candidates should be able to document their contributions to support workforce training in the following categories:
    • Advocated or secured funding to enhance workforce education/training, initiatives, or employment.
    • Promoted and marketed workforce training at a local or statewide level.
    • Service on various committees or organizations to strengthen workforce training.
    • Document impact on workforce participants to enhance productivity, quality of life, and self-sufficiency.
    • Demonstrated a long-term commitment to workforce education over an extended period of time.
