Make Your Credits Count
Start at a Mississippi community college, finish at a university. Articulation agreements and transfer tools help your hard work move with you toward a bachelor’s degree. Mississippi’s community colleges and universities work together so that you can complete your first two years close to home and transfer your credits toward a bachelor’s degree at a four-year institution.
Community college students who plan to transfer should be aware of the specific requirements of their intended major and transfer institution. These requirements can vary based on ACT score, high school preparation, high school GPA, and the policies of each college or university.
With careful planning, most students can transfer up to one-half of the hours required for a bachelor’s degree from a community college and apply them toward their degree at a four-year institution.
What Is an Articulation Agreement?
An articulation agreement is an understanding between two academic institutions that a course offered at one will be accepted for transfer credit at the other. These agreements help you choose courses at the community college that will transfer toward your bachelor’s degree.
Mississippi’s community colleges have articulation agreements with all Mississippi public four-year colleges and universities and with Millsaps College.
- Mississippi Articulation & Transfer Tool
Plan Your Transfer with MATT
Use the Mississippi Articulation & Transfer Tool (MATT) and regular advising to map out courses that transfer smoothly into your chosen university major. Choosing the right courses is essential. The Mississippi Articulation and Transfer Tool (MATT) was created to help students, advisors, and parents make informed decisions when planning a transfer to a Mississippi public four-year institution.
- Explore degree programs at Mississippi public universities.
- View how your community college courses apply to university majors.
- Build a transfer plan that keeps you on track toward graduation.
Meet regularly with your community college academic advisor and use MATT alongside the statewide articulation agreement when choosing your courses.
To ensure you are accessing the most current MATT Transfer Tool, all publications are now housed on the MCCB Publications page.
- Reverse Transfer
Many Mississippi community college students know they can transfer credits from a community college to a four-year university. Fewer realize that the reverse is also true.
Reverse Transfer allows students who have transferred from a community college to a public university with at least 16 transferable credits to send credits earned at the university back to the community college. These credits can be applied toward an associate degree, giving you an additional credential and strengthening your résumé.
How the Reverse Transfer Process Works
- Complete at least one semester at a Mississippi public university.
- Request that the university registrar send your transcript to the community college you attended.
- Contact the community college registrar and ask them to review your credits from both institutions to see if you are eligible for an associate degree.
- If you are eligible, the community college will let you know about any graduation applications or fees required to receive your diploma.
Eligibility Criteria
- Complete 62 hours in the courses required for an associate degree at either the community college or the university, in accordance with the policies of the community college.
- Complete at least 16 transferable credit hours at a single Mississippi community college.
- Be a current or former student at both the community college and a Mississippi public university.
- Follow the policies established by the institutions and pay any required fees.
Receiving your associate degree marks a major milestone on your way to a bachelor’s degree and adds another credential to your foundation for success.
